Our Physical Education facilities are excellent. we have a large field with tracks and pitches. We have an indoor sports hall, a school hall with gym equipment, an outside ball court, a large playground with markings for games and an enclosed early years outdoor area. Lunchtime clubs and after school clubs are provided in many sports. See how we spend money on PE development within our school.
PE, Sports and the School Sports Premium at Red Oak Primary School
Here at Red Oak Primary School, we are fortunate enough to be funded by the governments School Sports Premium Fund. The government grants premium money to be used in developing sports in UK schools. We take sports and PE very seriously at our school. Below is an outline of how we have been spending our sports premium grant:

Staff Training This year we spent £674 on staff training linked to Sports and PE. Mr Lee (PE coordinator) attended a Sports Leadership and management course which informed him of new procedures regarding the new PE curriculum and PE Premium spending. Mr Lee also attended the annual Suffolk PE conference, where he was able to further develop his knowledge regarding PE teaching within Suffolk schools. Three members of staff also attended a one day training course on Shallow Water and Swimming Safety. These members or staff are now qualified to teach shallow water swimming to small groups of children (when a fully qualified swimming instructor is supervising). A KS2 teacher also attended an orienteering and teambuilding course and fed back to other staff about her training. |
Teaching Resources: This year we spent £784.65 on teaching resources. We purchased all up to date Val Sabin Teaching manuals. These manuals include PE lesson plans (all based on the new curriculum) for all year groups from Year 1 up to Year 6. Mr Lee (PE coordinator) has trained staff how to use these manuals in their PE lessons. We also purchased swimming hats for our KS2 children. To improve our after school clubs we purchased a new football goal, some size 4 footballs and some size 4 rugby balls. We also purchased a flag pole, so that we could have Olympic style ceremonies during our sports days and fun run events (linked to our teaching of citizenship and PSHE).

Extra Curricular Clubs and Activities: This year we spent £3675 on extra curricular clubs and activities. We employed Dave Tuti (a former international rugby player and coach) to run an after school rugby club (which took place every Friday for five half terms). We also employed Premier Sports and Remi Gordon (a former Norwich City FC player) to hold weekly fitness clubs, these clubs took place every Friday lunchtime and after school on every Friday of the school year. These clubs were a big success, with good attendance and feedback. Other sports clubs (football, athletics, netball and hockey) were organised and run by Mr J Lee, Mr G Barnden and Mrs D Marsden (school staff), we used money from our PE Premium to provide support staff to help run these after school clubs .
We also bought the Golden Mile initiative from Premier Sports. The Golden Mile is a fantastic child led lunchtime fitness club that encourages children to run and improve their health and wellbeing.

Fixtures and Tournaments: This year we have spent £2352.43 on fixtures and tournaments. We have used a lot of this money on travel expenses, e.g. coaches and transport to get our children to local tournaments. We have also spent part of this money on new team kits for staff and children. Under the sponsorship of the Active Learning Trust our school has become an academy called Red Oak, we therefore purchased red coloured team kits with our new school emblem. The kits were also branded with the school sports motto ‘Believe to Achieve’ to give our children pride and aspiration when representing their school in sports matches. We purchased kits for both KS2 teams and KS1 teams. We were the only school at the ALT football tournament to have proper kits for KS1 children. We also purchased kits for sports staff so that children can identify staff members at fixtures and tournaments, it also gave our sports teams a more serious and professional set up. The new kits have had a very positive impact and we have many school displays linked to our new school sports kits and teams. We have had some success in tournaments this year, we won the Year 4 ALT football cup and we came second in the Lowestoft Schools’ tug of war tournament. We also came second in the KS2 ALT basketball championships and second in the ALT KS1 football championships. We also used part of this money to purchase medals and trophies to award winning sports teams/houses, including brand new sports day trophies for all three key stages (EYFS, KS1 and KS2), these trophies are included in our newly decorated school trophy cabinet, all trophies are decorated by the winning teams house colours. Part of this money also provided us with teaching cover for sports staff during our whole school sports days (3 days in total). We also used part of this money to cover sports staff during our whole school fun run day. |
Developing Playground Activity: This year we spent £1600 on developing playground activity. Our school is part of the OPAL (Outside play and learning) playground scheme. This scheme encourages children to be more active and adventurous during playtimes and lunchtimes. To develop our playground we purchased new bean bags, hoops, skipping ropes, quoits and outside games. These resources have had a very positive impact on our playground, lunchtime supervisors have reported that children are much more engaged during their playtimes and lunchtimes and it is clear to see that since we joined the OPAL scheme children have become much more active in the playtime games. |
We will be competing in many more fixtures in the coming months (times and dates to be confirmed).
We have a strong Sports Partnership with Westwood Primary School and Grove Primary School (our fellow Active Learning Trust Academies) and we play regular fixtures and tournaments against each other. We also have a strong sports partnership with Meadow Primary School and play regular friendly fixtures against them.
