The New Curriculum for Art
The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms
Art at Red Oak
Red Oak pupils are enabled to develop and explore their art skills throughout the Key Stages. Through their enquiry work they will produce creative pieces of art using a variety of mediums and will explore the way in which art can be both a very independent and personal experience, as well as a collaborative effort. Children are taught to use drawing, painting and sculpture to record their experiences as well as to encourage and develop their imagination and creativity.
Red Oak children will learn about a wide range of artists and designers and the impact that these have made/are making on society. Skills of observation and evaluation are taught so that the children are able to master their techniques through self-improvement. The teaching of Art at Red Oak is supported by the Suffolk Art Scheme plans which ensure a well-structured approach to the teaching and learning of Art.
Assessment
All lessons within our school have a clear learning objective and success criteria which is shared with the children; this means children understand what they will be learning, how they can be successful in learning and how they will be assessed. We ensure lessons are differentiated appropriately for each child. Children at Red Oak evaluate and peer-assess their work to enable independence and scope for improvement..
Children have art books with learning objectives to evidence coverage and progress. Children’s art work is evidenced around the school within classrooms and on display.
