Here at Red Oak Primary School our children use a carefully designed programme called Maths Makes Sense (MMS) to learn Maths. They use physical actions, concrete objects such as cups and special vocabulary to help them become self-assured mathematicians.
For the children to have the best chance of being confident mathematicians it is important that they repeatedly practice basic number skills so that eventually the children will know the skills by heart and be able to use them with ease.
Maths Makes Sense identifies the key concepts children need to learn to achieve success in Maths. These are known as the '10 Big Ideas' - addition, subtraction, equals, multiplication, division, denomination, ratio, infinity, the symbols speak to you and the language tells you the answer. Children are taught these concepts and use them consistently so that understanding grows over time and they are able to apply Maths successfully to real life examples.
